Lotus symbolizes the process of the enlightenment. Lotus roots are in the soil of the pond or river bottom. The soil symbolizes the source of suffering, like grief, sorrow, lamentation, etc. Then, lotus stems come out from the soil, go through the water and come out to the surface. Then, the flowers bloom above the water surface. The flowers symbolize our free status from the suffering.
